Like movies, I like watching quality stories from other cultures, even if they are covering common or easily relatable themes, but with inherent cultural twists. It’s a learning opportunity as well as a means of reminiscing for myself.

Anime

I broke out a separate category for anime shows and movies because it is a long list in itself within a particular genre of style (animated). These may be domestic or international, but all are beloved by me and sometimes the family, too. There are a range of classics and contemporaries. Many, but not all, are based on Japanese manga. Most of the Japanese-produced ones are dubbed and subbed. Watch as you like. It's a list that has evolved as the platform algorithms keep suggesting things that you end up taking chances on. There are things I have watched that will never make this list... and a whole bunch of others I have yet to watch... and decide to add to this list or not.

• Afro Samurai (Crunchyroll) – Samuel L. Jackson is a black, samurai-style killer on a revenge mission. First class animation, dialog, and action.
• Agent Elvis (Netflix) – What if… Elvis was a secret agent?
• Akuma Kun (Netflix) - Adventure of a powerful, lowkey psychic in the form of an emo boy.
• Apothecary Diaries (Netflix / Crunchyroll) - Historical setting? Check. Mystery-busting young heroine? Check. Uncomfortable romantic interaction? Check. Delightful? Every. single. episode.
• Blood of Zeus (Netflix) - Greek mythology as told through Japanese animators’ eyes. The war against the Gods. Not strictly following "canon" of accepted Greek mythology, but entertaining.
• Blue Eye Samurai (Netflix) - Unique revenge story set at the turn of the Edo-Meiji era. Gorgeous and compelling.
• Blue Period (Netflix) – An average, run of the mill, high schooler decides to “take up art” on a whim in deciding what to do after graduation. He falls in the rabbit hole… and finds himself willing to fall all the way in, wherever it might lead. Wonderfully tale of how an "innocent" is introduced to what art is... or can be.
• Campfire Cooking in Another World with my Absurd Skill (Crunchyroll) – Isekai adventure comedy. Guy ends up in a magical realm with the magical ability to shop an online back in the real world… and have the items delivered.
• Castlevania (Netflix) - If you like vampire stories... and tie-ins to classic video games.
• Cop Craft (Crunchyroll) – Not your average buddy-cop series.
• DanDaDan (Netflix) - Boy meets girl. Girl has psychic powers. Boy believes in aliens, but not "magic". Boy gets involuntarily sucked in by being possessed. Action, hilarity, and teenage romance ensue. Delightfully bonkers.
• Dandelion (Netflix) - The exploits of a team of ghost-hunting angels. One of them really isn't into his job, even if he is good at it... until a conspiracy sends things spiraling outta control.
• Delicious in Dungeon (Netflix) - Monster culinary show wrapped in a dungeon adventure
• Devil May Cry (Netflix / Crunchyroll) – Silly, supernatural action story. Amazing visuals, though.
• Disenchantment (Netflix) – From the team behind Futurama and The Simpsons. A fairytale princess decides that everyone can fuck off so she can make her own decisions… even if misguided and disastrous.
• DoroHeDoro (Netflix) - Watch only if you want your brain melted. Binge or don't wait long between viewing episodes in order to stay caught up.
• Exploding Kittens (Netflix) - Yes, an anime based on the wacky card game. This is no less wacky... even wackier.
• FLCL/Fooly Cooly (Crunchyroll) – WTF did I just watch?
• Frieren (Netflix / Crunchyroll) - An adventurer trope with a twist. Expedition led by a centuries-old elven mage... who acts like a lazy 20-something many times.
• Haunted Hotel (Netflix) - Just what it says. But dad is dead. And there's a demon trapped in the body of a 12th century child.
• Hell's Paradise (Netflix) - Accept execution or take a chance on getting a pardon by accepting what is basically a suicide mission to track down and return an elixir of immortality.
• High School DxD (Crunchyroll) – See Kill la Kill.
• Human Resources (Netflix) – From the creators of “Big Mouth”. What do the emotion monsters do when they’re not with their humans?
• Inuyasha - One of Rebecca's all-time favorites. Girl falls in magical well. Gets transported several hundred years into the past. Girl meets demon wolf boy. Girl resembles his past true love... which ended not-so-well. Romantic entanglement and magical adventure ensue.
• Kill la Kill (Crunchyroll) – Cutthroat high school (literally) antics. Be warned… serious otaku-grade anime (IYKYK!)
• Love, Death + Robots (Netflix) - Several "seasons" of shorts. Mostly hits with a few misses (personal opinion). Must like sci-fi.
• Mating Season (Netflix) – Modern single life told through the eyes of woodland creatures.
• Mob Psycho 100 (Netflix / Crunchyroll) - A teenage nerd slowly manifests the most powerful psychic power in the world... and isn't too sure he likes it.
• My Dress-Up Darling (Netflix / Crunchyroll) - Don't judge me. I like it.
• Natsume’s Book of Friends (Crunchyroll) – Diving deep into Japanese yokai myths. A troubled boy, because he can see yokai when no one else can, inherits a book from his grandmother. Leading him on a journey to resolve her past.
• Onimusha (Netflix) - Mixing the legend of a famous ronin with myth and a quest.
• Onmyoji (Netflix) - Based on Korean mythology, the exploits of a renown spiritualist, or mage.
• Pluto (Netflix) - The original story of Astro Boy. Sublime.
• Raven of the Inner Palace (Crunchyroll) – Pseduo-historical ancient China setting. A court “witch” concubine and the emperor she serves. Episodic mystery drama like Apothecary Diaries.
• Record of Ragnarok (Netflix) - "The Gods" decide to wipe out humanity and start over given the state of the world. A loophole gives humanity a chance to avoid destruction by dueling the Gods' chosen champions with humanity's greatest champions. A mix of various global cultures, religions, myths, and legends with a significant dose of the writers' prerogative to ignore canon and make up shit they think better serves their purposes. Bonkers, yet oddly compelling.
• Rosario + Vampire (Crunchyroll) – See Kill la Kill.
• Rurouni Kenshin (Crunchyroll) – There are two different versions. Both are good, but the 2023 version clips along at a faster pace. Set in the early Meiji era Japan, chronicling the adventures of a legendary ronin after the Boshin War. There are also some live action movies based on the same legend.
• Sakamoto Days (Netflix) - What happens when a famed assassin is forced out of retirement?
• Sakuna of Rice and Ruin (Netflix) - Another videogame homage... but little female goddess as the anti-hero. Charming. And lots of insight about rice horticulture.
• Samurai Jack - An American anime classic. Every scene, hell every frame, is a work of art. The storytelling is sublime, even when the episode has no dialog.
• Scissor Seven (Netflix) – Chinese anime about an unlikely aspiring hairstylist, who turns out to be an assassin with amnesia. Circumstances require him to get his memory, and deadly skills, back… but a comedy.
• Seis Manos (Netflix) – A Mexi-Asian, occult, supernatural fight for humanity’s survival story.
• Solar Opposites (Netflix) – From the team behind Rick & Morty. An alien “family” crash lands on earth and learns to assimilate... or not. Can be delightfully raunchy and silly at the same time.
• Strip Law (Netflix) – A young lawyer in Las Vegas trying to either live up to the legacy of his now dead star attorney mother… or escape it.
• The Summer Hikaru Died (Netflix) - What would you do if you best friend disappeared for a few weeks and then strangely reappeared... but something was... off.
• Thermae Romae Nova (Netflix) - A Roman bath architect gets transported to modern Japan to witness how bathing culture has changed, as well as remained the same. The architecture is terrible, but it is a fun fish-out-of-water (quite literally) watch.
• Trese (Netflix) – Based on Filipino folklore. A young woman gets sucked into a criminal underworld teaming with the supernatural.
• Twilight of the Gods (Netflix) - Nordic mythology through the eyes of Zach Snyder
• Uncle from Another World (Netflix) - Isekai-subgenre. Your uncle wakes from a decades-long coma, only to discover he's actually been in a parallel universe the whole time and now has weird supernatural powers to compliment his otaku personality.
• The Venture Bros. (Netflix) – Alternate universe where “Johnny Quest” grows up to be a semi-mad scientist and have his own adventures. Goofy AF. Bonkers AF. Fun AF.
• The Way of the Househusband (Netflix) - Started as a manga, became a viral webtoon series of shorts, and even has a live action version. A yakuza retires to become a househusband for his office-lady wife. Gangster must navigate domestic life while dealing with past associations. Wonderfully silly.
• Witch Watch (Netflix) - See My Dress-Up Darling.
• Yaiba: Samurai Legend - Pint-sized hero mixed with Japanese mythology and legends
• Yasuke (Netflix) - A former black samurai (no, not THAT one) gets sucked back into a paranormal conflict for his adoptive country's survival.
